Former President John Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the next NDC government will scrap the recently started Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy).

Mahama speaking at the NDC’s “Ghana at a crossroads” event held in Accra on Monday, May 2, 2022, said the opposition party is not opposed to taxation, however, the party is against taxes that burden the Ghanaian people.

“We in the NDC do not oppose taxation as a principle. We will not be pretentious and couch fanciful slogans to condemn the principle of taxation like the NPP did in the past. We are, however, implacably opposed to distortionary and burdensome taxes like the e-levy that only force Ghanaians to endure more suffering. Adding “a new National Democratic Congress Government, God willing and with the votes of the sovereign people of Ghana – in 2025 – will repeal the E-Levy Act.”

However, he has been criticized severely with the ruling NPP insisting that the former President is being deceptive and that there's no way he'll cancel the levy if he comes to power in 2025.

Adding his voice to this during Peace Power Sports segment on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', renowned Sports journalist, Dan Kweku Yeboah said any politician who says the levy will be cancelled is being dishonest.

"Politicians think we're fools...what didn't they tell us when VAT was being introduced. Anyone who says it'll be cancelled is just being deceptive. When you're looking for power, you will say anything to get it..." he said.

Meanwhile, Sit-in host, Nana Yaw Kesseh has urged the government to enhance communication on e-levy because "the misinformation in the system is too much."
