#FixTheCountry Demo: This Is Not The Time For Any Group To Embark On A Demonstration-Dr DaCosta Advises

Director of Health Promotions at the Ghana Health Service, Dr Aboagye DaCosta has advised against the attempt by some Ghanaians to embark on a demonstration in an era where the country is trying hard to protect Ghanaians from the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to him, the country is making gains in the fight against Covid-19 and so such a gathering as some demonstrators are craving for can cause the spread of the coronavirus as Ghana health workers are working hard to fight against a third wave.

Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, Dr Aboagye DaCosta advised that just as the protocol forbids Ghanaians from organising funerals and conventions, it will be disastrous to entertain a demonstration that has the potential to call for a third wave in the country.

“We should not joke with a third wave which is claiming lives in India and other countries. This is the time that all of us must come together to fight against the virus as it is reducing its spread in the country but if we are rather organising people to come together for a demonstration, we cannot tolerate it”, he warned.

He posited that even though he is not against the fact that some Ghanaians want to embark on a demonstration to express their grievances, it is rather suicidal to encourage such an exercise as we are not in normal time.

“Looking at how far the health workers have fought against the Covid-19, we cannot allow the chance for some group of Ghanaians to take us back to the difficult moment where the cases escalated. This is not the right time for any group to go on a demonstration…even the law does not allow it and so the group should understand”, he advised.

He further argued that when the youth of Christ Embassy gathered for their Pneumatic night, there were social media uproar and organisations like GMA and Occupy Ghana called for the arrest of the leadership.

"How can we use social to promote demonstrations activities which will bring large numbers together to spread Covid-19? it is simply not the time to do this. let's protect the gains of Covid-19", he cautioned.

Meanwhile, an Accra High Court, under Justice Ruby Aryeetey, has restrained conveners of the ''Fix The Country'' protest from embarking on a demonstration scheduled on Sunday, May 9.

The court ruling follows an affidavit filed by the Police against the conveners.

The Police action is pursuant to Section 1(6) of the Public Order Act, 1944 (491).

According to the court writ, the conveners, their associates and all parties interested in taking the protest march are ''prohibited from embarking on any demonstration on Sunday, 9th May 2021 or any other date until the restriction on public gathering is lifted by the appropriate authority''
