Martin Amidu Free To Ask Parliament For Information On Agyapa Deal - Majority Leader

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has welcomed the demand by the office of the Special Prosecutor for information on the Agyapa Royalty deal.

According to the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, with the inception of the right to Information Law, anyone wanting to access information on the Agyapa Royalty deal for clarification and understanding can do so as a Ghanaian including the Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu.

“With the inception of right to Information Law, if anybody wants clarification or understanding of any deal, the person can demand information that can make the person understand the deal,” he stated.

“So, for instance, Martin Amidu can ask Parliament to help him understand the Agyapa Royalty deal, we can give it to him and it is not only him who can request for evidence about the Agyapa Royalty deal,” he stressed.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, the Suame Constituency lawmaker admitted to the publication that Parliament last Thursday, 10th September 2020 received a letter through the Clerk of Parliament from the Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu requesting for information on the Agyapa Royalty deal.

He added that the Speaker of Parliament was informed about the demand of the Office of the Special Prosecutor and then mail the needed document to Mr. Martin Amidu for his perusal as a citizen who has the right under the RTI Act 898.

He again mentioned that he instructed the Clerk of Parliament to add the document on the amendment to the Mineral Income Investment Fund for better appreciation of the Agyapa Royalty deal even though he did not ask for that document.

He insisted that the additional document to the demand of the Special Prosecutor will help him to investigate any corruption he suspects in the Agyapa Royalty deal as he indicated in his letter of request.

He said that Parliament, being representative for the entire country has nothing to hide in the Agyapa Royalty deal.

“The thing is that nobody has anything to hide in the Agyapa Royalty deal because Parliament is the representation of the entire country and so if someone wants an understanding of a deal, there is nothing wrong with that,” he indicated.
